IDFA Competition for Mid-Length Documentary

The jury is Nicolas Entel (Argentina), Peter Friedman (USA), Hedda van Gennep (the Netherlands), Samira Makhmalbaf (Iran) and Farah Nayeri (Iran/France).
The following have been nominated in the IDFA Competition for Best Mid-Length Documentary (films up to 60 minutes): Camera/Woman (Morocco) by Karima Zoubir; Red Wedding (Cambodia/France) by Lida Chan and Guillaume Suon and The Successor of Kakiemon (the Netherlands) by Suzanne Raes. The NTR IDFA Award for Best Mid-Length Documentary consists of € 10,000.

The nominees for the best mid-length documentary are (in alphabetical order):

  •  “Camera/Woman” by Karima Zoubir – for its intriguing portrayal of Moroccan society through the lives of a divorced camera-woman and her disapproving family. The jury noted the director’s effective use of images both in storytelling and in capturing the lavish ceremonies that the camera-woman was hired to film.
  •  “The Successor of Kakiemon” by Suzanne Raes – for its visually exquisite depiction of a Japanese master of ceramics who is preparing to pass the baton to his soft-spoken son. This silent tribute to an ancestral tradition gave the jury a feeling of eternity.
  •  “Red Wedding” by Lida Chan and Guillaume Suon – for its beautiful and poetic treatment of one of the most tragic episodes in human history: the Cambodian genocide. To the jury, “Red Wedding” combined a strong historical backdrop and powerful visuals with a touching human story.

Ivan Entel, Sin’s producer, is back in Colombia, shooting mystery project for Japanese clients in Colombia. Might be the first time a Japanese agency shoots in this country. Now that the days of horror are in the past, will Colombia become the next hot spot for production? Who knows, but it sure is pretty.
